Over the decades, PSE has designed many new bridges and has inspected, evaluated and designed repairs and upgrades for a large number of existing bridges. Included in our experience are structures of concrete, wood and steel and combinations thereof.

Oregon Department of Forestry
Trail Bridges

The Oregon Department of Forestry, an agency of the State of Oregon, sought to develop a set of standard bridge designs that would meet the requirements for the various trails on the state forest lands. The overall goal of this project was for ODF to obtain standard trail bridge designs to be used by hikers, horses and ATVs for a wide variety of trail conditions. PSE was contracted by ODF to provide bridge designs and engineering drawings to meet these conditions. These included bridges with spans up to 50 feet long and widths of 4 to 6 feet. |
PSE provided designs for bridge stringers made of sawn lumber, glulam, native logs and steel. Decks can be of wood or steel and handrails of wood, round poles or steel. In addition, three options for end abutments were provided. These documents allow ODF staff to select and to construct bridges that are uniquely suited to site conditions which are often difficult and remote. |

Moulton Falls Bridge Restoration

This aesthetically pleasing trail bridge over the Lewis River in Washington was constructed in the early 1970’s and had experienced a high level of weathering, showing signs of significant damage and soil erosion around the abutments. |
PSE performed a condition evaluation investigating wood conditions and water content, connection details and a full gravity and lateral load analysis for the current code loads. PSE then designed and generated construction documents for structural upgrades and wood treatment criteria, including the addition of metal flashing for glulam arch protection. |

Commonwealth Lake Bridge Upgrade

Commonwealth Lake was developed in Beaverton for recreation in the 1950’s. One of the bridges, used for pedestrians and maintenance vehicles, also serves to house lift gates for control of the water level in the lake. The bridge and its concrete abutments had decayed over the years and PSE was engaged to inspect the structure and recommend repairs. |

Lower Vaughn Creek Tillamook Bridges

PSE was engaged to design two bridges to span the Lower Vaughn Creek in Tillamook. The 30-foot bridges were to be constructed utilizing the steel sections and the existing bridge configuration on the site. The projected use of the bridge was for traversing the creek with farm equipment and the occasional passage of cattle across the creek. |
A site visit was performed to analyze the existing conditions and inspect the proposed building materials. PSE provided the design of new structural elements as required for the existing bridge section, design of the new bridge section utilizing the available steel beams and new bridge decking materials, and the design of concrete spread footings for both bridge installations. |
