Featured Projects

Garden Home Recreation Center
2004
Client: Tualatin Hills Park & Recreation District

Along the east wall of the center’s main building, an 18’ wide by 90’ long roof had been constructed some years ago over an existing entry walk. The wood framing and glulam beams had experienced considerable rot and there was concern for its safety.

PSE inspected the structure and recommended immediate use restrictions while documents for repairs and upgrading were being prepared.

In addition, in order to maintain safe conditions for possible winter snow, PSE prepared drawings for temporary shoring to remain in place until permanent repairs were completed.

Cedar Hills Glulam Arch
Investigation and Repair

2002-2004
Client: Tualatin Hills Park & Recreation District

When the Beaverton School District closed Cedar Hills Grade School in the 1980’s, the Park District acquired the school building and gymnasium which had been constructed in the early 1950’s. The gymnasium roof features a series of glulam arches which terminate outside of the exterior walls of the building. The heels of those arches had experienced excessive rot from weathering and water damage. PSE identified critically unsafe conditions, prompting an immediate use restriction.
An emergency repair to a highly degraded arch member was designed so the district could keep this high-use facility open. Then in a multi-phased project PSE provided final remediation and construction documents for the design of temporary, and later permanent, repairs to the exposed ends of the arches.

Aquatic Center Diving Tower Investigation and Repair
2000
Client: Tualatin Hills Park & Recreation District

The District’s principle sports complex features an Olympic sized swimming pool and tower for diving from 5.0, 7.5 and 10.0 meter heights. The reinforced concrete tower was constructed in 1977. Due to the caustic environment it was exposed to, the tower exhibited concrete cracking, water infiltration and the rusting of reinforcing steel and spalling of concrete. In addition, the steel access stairs and their connections had rusted badly.
PSE was engaged to study the condition of the tower and prepare a report outlining options for repair. Subsequently, the District ordered the preparation of contract documents for the complete restoration of the tower and for replacement and upgrading of the stairs to current code requirements.

Nehalem Pool Building Investigation
2002
Client: North County Recreation District

Several years ago, the Recreation District inherited these 1920’s vintage buildings from the Nehalem, Oregon School District. The buildings have been designated as an evacuation center for disaster relief and the Owner recognized the need for a thorough structural evaluation. Over the years, there had been a large number of undocumented, and often ill-advised, repairs and alterations. In addition, many of the wood members had rotted due to roof leaking, swim pool humidity and poor foundation conditions.
PSE performed a limited structural evaluation and prepared a report which outlined the need for a thorough evaluation of structural condition, fire and life safety requirements, wind and seismic capability, and other vital needs for upgrading.
