Part of the policy of many jurisdictions is the belief that public art is a vital part of the fabric of society. Often, a commissioning body will require that the artist insure the structural safety of his or her work. PSE will discuss the project with the artist and review preliminary drawings and sketches. The components are structurally analyzed for gravity and lateral loads including seismic and wind.
All pieces will require some type of support. Large public works are frequently supported on their own concrete foundations; these require structural design and assurance that supporting earth is competent to resist the weights. Many other pieces are to be mounted on the outside or inside of existing buildings. In these cases, it is imperative that the building structure is adequate to support the additional weight.
Finally, the owner will usually require the preparation of supporting documents such as structural calculations and fabrication drawings. |
