Ridgefield Arena and Training Barn

BATTLE GROUND, WA  /  EQUESTRIAN

PSE provided structural engineering design for a large arena and stable structure constructed of steel and timber. The project involved coordination with the supplier of a premanufactured steel building for the arena, with PSE designing the reinforced concrete foundation.  The foundation design included an innovative strut and tie foundation system to optimize construction costs and allow large span arena frames, as well as large penetrations through the sidewalls that interrupted the typical arena framing. The adjacent timber framed stables were located within 12” of the arena and required a specially detailed seismic gap coordinated between several disciplines including the specialty equine architect and the contractor. A timber framed barn also included separate living quarters with ornate timber frame trusses and an architectural steel floating staircase.
